Description This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to identify and select appropriate materials for use in the manufacture of canvas or sail products.

Learning Outcomes and Application This unit applies to the identification, selection and handling of materials and checking of stock availability. Work may involve interaction with other people in the workplace including supervisors and production personnel. Work may be conducted in a variety of environments, such as:operational indoor workplacesoperational outdoor workplacesWork may be conducted in small to large scale enterprises and may involve individual and team activities. Work is performed within defined procedures under direct supervision. Element: Identify materials
  • Materials are identified by appearance, texture, density, stock labels and product codes
  • Stock labels or tags are checked against product codes and manufacturer specifications to confirm correct identification
  • Workplace procedures and instruction are read and interpreted
       
Element: Select materials
  • Materials are selected in accordance with job specifications, fitness for purpose and work order instructions
  • Materials stocks are checked to ensure availability of sufficient quantities of materials to meet job requirements
  • Materials are checked to ensure they conform to specifications, descriptions and relevant quality standards
  • Knowledge of materials are applied to perform required tasks
       
Element: Handle and store materials
  • Appropriate OHS practices and work practices are followed when examining stock in racks or shelves
  • Safe working practices are followed when handling or moving stock
  • Appropriate lifting equipment is used to lift heavy or awkward loads
  • Appropriate posture and lifting techniques are used for manual handling of materials
  • Assistance in handling materials is sought when necessary
  • Materials are stored in accordance with workplace practices and manufacturer recommendations
